An introductory class will be held at Kean University on Wednesday Sept. 9, 7:30PM at J (Hutchinson) 100

There will also be an on-campus midterm and final exam.

I will  have some review classes on campus, with optional attendance.

At or before the beginning of the semester, you will need the following:

The course has two components - the textbook with online components and a live lecture/chat feature.

  • Purchase your Textbook:

We will be using the textbook The Basic Practice of Statistics, 5th Edition, by David Moore and its online components for the course. Click on  Preview>> StatsPortal as a Student  to preview an online course . THIS IS JUST A PREVIEW.This will give you an idea of the type of interface you'll be dealing with throughout the semester. StatsPortal is a web site containing a complete eBook that supports highlighting and note taking, study resources, and your assignments.

We will be using the Portal for assigned coursework, so you will need to purchase an ACCESS CODE. You can buy the text/online package at the bookstore, which includes the access code, or purchase the access code online (with a credit card). If  you choose to purchase the online package only, you will get an e-book but not the printed textbook. PLEASE DO NOT BUY THE BOOK (EVEN WITH A CD) FROM ANY ONLINE RETAILERS, BECAUSE IT WILL NOT COME WITH THE ONLINE ACCESS CODE. ONLY THE BOOKSTORE OR THE PUBLISHER WEB SITE CAN PROVIDE THE ACCESS CODE. Email me if you have any questions about the book, or wait until the first meeting to find out more about the book.

  • Register your access code -

To use the StatsPortal, you will need an access code. This is available with the text you bought in the bookstore or online at StatsPortal. Once you have the access code, you MUST follow these steps to be in my ONLINE section of the course.

  1. Click into the textbook web site and click on the REGISTER an Activation Code link
  2. You will get a screen.  Enter all the required information.
  3. Further down, you will see the options to pick the correct section. Under Select Course/Instructor, choose the correct section - Statistics - Section 06  Online.  See screenshot below.

You must choose Section 06 Online or you will be in the wrong section and miss important assignments specific to the online course.

  • Live Chat

Live lecture/discussion will be scheduled online, usually on Wednesdays at 8PM. To access the live chat sessions, you must do the following:
  1. You must  create an account on WizIQ by September 12,2009 . It is free and will be used for online lectures. It has many more features than the chat feature that comes with the online textbook. The login for this is separate from the one for the textbook site.

  2. Once you have created your account, login and "invite" the instructor as a contact .  A portion of the  home screen  is  shown below - click on Find Now:

  3. Then click on the link  like the one below. Use my email adress rnarasim[at]kean[dot]edu to invite me (replace [at] with the @ symbol and [dot] with the . symbol). You MUST invite me through this procedure or you will not be able to join the live lecture/chat sessions.
  4. Once a live session is scheduled, you will receive an invitation by email to attend. Click on the link in the email to attend the scheduled session. Save the link, since you can view (but not interact with) the recording of the live session afterward. NOTE: session recordings remain on the system only 30 days after the session.

  5. Please create your wiziq account by September 12,2009 so that there are no delays in getting session announcements to you.
